Why you can't learn Morse code from a chart
A Morse chart teaches you to translate rather than to hear. You learn the shape ".-", then convert beeps into that shape, then convert the shape into "A" — three steps where a fluent operator has one. That extra layer becomes a hard ceiling at around 10 words per minute, and unlearning it is harder than never building it.
Almost everyone starts the same way. You find a table of the alphabet, you print it, and you set about memorising twenty-six patterns of dots and dashes. Within a week you can recite them. Within a month you have hit a wall you cannot explain, somewhere around eight or ten words per minute, and no amount of practice moves it.
The chart did that.
What the chart actually teaches
When you learn A = .- from a table, you are learning a visual fact. So when
you later hear a short beep followed by a long one, your brain does this:
- Hear the sounds
- Convert them to dots and dashes
- Recall which letter has that pattern
- Say “A”
A fluent operator does one step: hear it, know it. The same way you do not spell out a written word letter by letter before recognising it.
Those extra steps cost time, and the cost is fixed. At 5 words per minute there is room for them. At 15 there is not, and the whole system collapses — which is why the wall arrives suddenly rather than gradually.
Why the wall is at 10 WPM specifically
At 10 words per minute a dot lasts 120 milliseconds and a whole character takes under half a second. Conscious recall runs at roughly half a second per item. You are not slow because you lack practice; you are slow because you are asking a deliberate process to keep up with an automatic one.
Speeding up the conscious step does not work. The step has to go.
What to do instead
Learn each character as a sound from the first minute. Not as dots and dashes you then convert — as a rhythm you recognise directly, the way you recognise a doorbell without decomposing it.
Use Farnsworth timing. Send each character at a fast speed, but leave long gaps between characters. This is the single most useful thing a beginner can change. Slowing the characters themselves is what invites counting; keeping them fast makes counting impossible, and the long gaps give you time to recall without it.
If you are practising at 5 words per minute overall, send the characters at 18 and stretch the gaps. It feels harder for about two days and then it does not.
Send as well as listen. Keying a character is a motor memory, and motor memory attaches to the rhythm rather than to the written shape. It is also the fastest way to find out that your idea of a dash is too short.
Is the chart useless?
No — it is useful for exactly two things: looking up a character you have forgotten, and understanding why the codes are what they are. The tree structure behind Morse is genuinely interesting, and knowing that E is one dot because E is the most common letter in English makes the whole alphabet feel designed rather than arbitrary.
Just do not try to memorise it. Read it once, understand the shape of it, then close it and go and listen to something.
Where to start
The seven-day plan teaches the alphabet in the order the code is built, one layer of the tree per day, with audio from the first character. It takes about two hours in total.
If you would rather start by sending than by listening, the telegraph turns your keyboard into a straight key — and the timing there is deliberately forgiving, so hesitating mid-character does not punish you.
